A PT will use different treatment options, depending on the needs and overall health of a patient. PTs will develop treatment plans that are designed to improve a patient’s mobility while also reducing their level of pain. Treatment plans can include exercises that are designed to improve a patient’s flexibility and range of motion, strengthen muscles and help to restore function to limbs and muscles. These types of treatments can include teaching a patient to use a walker, crutches, canes, wheelchairs or other types of movement aids.

In order to become a PT, there are a number of requirements that need to be fulfilled. These requirements will include licensure, coursework and internships.

Physical Therapist Requirements for Degree Programs

Most states will have similar requirements, such as the completion of an accredited master’s degree program and the successful completion of the PT certification exam.

During the master’s degree program a student will also need to fulfill PT requirements for clinical training. The length of the clinical training is typically six months. These clinical internships can take place in hospitals, clinics, private practices, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Often, a student will choose a specialty area and will have their internship mainly in that area.

After the student has graduated from a program they will need to take the national licensing exam for physical therapists. Eligibility requirements for the licensure exam can vary from state to state.

In order to qualify for enrollment into a master’s degree program a student will need to have completed a bachelor’s degree program. The bachelor’s degree program will usually take four years to complete, although taking summer courses or enrolling in accelerated programs can significantly help to reduce the amount of time needed to obtain the degree. Accelerated programs are only offered for full-time students due to the extensive course load. The bachelor’s degree program will include a clinical internship that is two months in length.

State Education and Training Requirements

Some states can require physical therapists to obtain a doctoral degree in this field, in order to legally practice. This type of program can take four to six years to complete, depending on whether the student has a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

A PT will need to have excellent interpersonal skills, which is why many of the physical therapist requirement degree programs will feature a course in psychology. The PT should also be able to effectively communicate with a patient and be able to accurately gauge the patient’s progress or decline in condition, as well as be able to determine if physical therapy is beneficial to a patient.
