The required education for physical therapists is seven years in length. An entry level position as a PT will require an individual to obtain the minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Individuals who are interested in pursuing this program should plan on enrolling in an undergraduate program in such related fields as kinesiology, clinical science and biological science.

How to Qualify for Enrollment into a Physical Therapist Degree Program

The physical therapist degree at the master’s level lasts two to three years and will provide students with an in-depth look at the study of human anatomy, rehabilitation techniques and the body’s limitations. Additionally, a student will also be able to participate in a clinical internship and learn about practical physical therapy methods and techniques. A student will also learn about motor function reeducation and biomechanics.  In order to qualify for enrollment into an accredited master’s degree program a student will need to complete the four year physical therapist degree at the bachelor’s level.

The course material in the master’s degree program will prepare a graduate to take the certification exam for physical therapists through the CAPTE.  Some of the core classes for the master’s degree program will include cardiac testing, kinesiology, geriatrics in physical therapy, pulmonary testing, orthotics and prosthetics and prevention and wellness.

The physical therapist degree program features an extensive clinical internship, which allows a student to obtain hands on experience while also helping the student to determine which area of medicine they would like to specialize in. Once a student has determined their area of interest they can request an internship in that field.

According to statistics, the number of PTs nationwide is expected to have an increase by more than thirty percent in the next six years.

There are a few different Ph.D. programs for physical therapy to choose from. The first program is transitional in nature and is designed for individuals who have a master’s degree in this field and wish to further their education. Another Ph.D. program is a program that is almost seven years in length and is designed for individuals who do not already have a master’s degree in this field.

Advanced Degree Programs for PTs

There are several states that will require the PT to have a minimum of a doctoral degree in order to qualify for licensure. This type of program is similar to a master’s degree program, but it will also incorporate more clinical work in the field. Students that are enrolled in the seven year long program will need to have a GED or high school diploma. The curriculum in this program will train a student for a career as a PT. The skills that are obtained in this program will allow a student to take a licensure exam. Students will complete group projects, clinical internships and lab assignments. Some of the core classes include clinical applications, patient management, anatomy, manual therapy, professional issues, global community seminars, musculoskeletal system and health administration.
